Top 5 tips for buying a new computer

Top 5 tips for buying a new computer - TODAY Tech - TODAY.com

Get info from the three sources

Editor's reviews, user opinions and manufacturers information — each has a different perspective. Editors are going to have approached the product methodically and without bias if they are from an independent source like CNET.com. Users will have lived with the product for the longest time and in the most diverse ways, which can reveal flaws or benefits that don't become apparent in short-term lab reviews. And Manufacturers will have a unique concept of how they intended the product to be used and what makes it stand out. Armed with these three perspectives you can feel pretty well-armed to figure out if the computer — or any consumer electronics product — is the right one for you

Make more RAM (random access memory) your main priority with any PC

CPU speed and hard drive space are usually OK, memory is what's often skimpy on a new machine. All too often what is perceived by users as their computer being too slow is actually not the CPU speed but the amount of memory. When a computer has too little memory, it doesn't tell you, it just starts using part of the its hard drive space as a poor form of additional memory known as swap space or virtual memory. It's a clunky, slow way for a computer to run but it at least keeps things going. Much better is to give a computer the RAM it needs, 2GB at least if you want to run any of the latest operating systems with all their features. Consider 3GB if you can afford it because there's almost no such thing as too much RAM and the sweet spot for RAM for most users is somewhere between 2GB and 4GB if they are running Windows Vista with all the bells & whistles enabled.

Shop for a laptop online and in store

You need to test drive the keyboard, mouse and monitor since they are integrated. You can always change the monitor, keyboard and mouse on a desktop PC but not on a laptop unless you have it tethered to a desk. Check the keyboard for good key action — the amount of travel from top to bottom of a key press; more usually feels better. Laptops use many different kinds of mouse pointing devices so make sure you like the one your new laptop uses. Or at least find out if you hate it and should buy a travel mouse right away. And of course check the brightness of the monitor. Laptops are often used in brightly lit areas where ambient lighting it not idea, so make sure you have a bright display and one that seems large enough to your eyes.

How to Create an AutoRun File for a USB Flash Drive

How to Create an AutoRun File for a USB Flash Drive

USB AutoRun is the term used when specific, predetermined digital content is automatically launched from your flash drive as soon as it is plugged into a memory port. The content can include items like a web page, interactive menu, multimedia presentation, a document, or an entire application. Creating an autorun USB drive allows for customization of content as well as the personalization of the title of your flash drive and its autoplay setup options.

Flash drive autorun has two primary purposes. First, it helps the user navigate the contents of the device with ease—a menu will quickly display all of the drive's files without any prompting on your part. Second, when the USB drive is distributed as a promotional gift, it provides a second layer of marketing on top of a branded exterior. The USB autorun can deliver web pages, commercials or special offers without the risk of users missing it or having to search for the flash drive's contents on your desktop or buried in My Computer settings.

NOTE: Keep in mind that Mac operating systems cannot use autorun, and it is believed they do so as a general security measure. Also Windows Vista and Windows 7 users are not initially set up for the command, but have the option to manually turn on autorun from the control panel. If you are working with a large quantity of flash drives, a custom USB duplication service can quickly handle your autorun needs. However, creating an autorun flash drive from the comfort of your own PC or laptop is also possible. First, you will need to open the text/HTML editor, Notepad, to make USB autolaunch work. The program is intended to provide a clean slate for the creation of code. You will also need your executable application or document you are wanting to open. Once in Notepad, type out the following text:

    [autorun]
    ;Open=PlayMe.exe
    ShellExecute=PlayMe.exe
    UseAutoPlay=1

autorun

Then, save your Notepad file as autorun.inf under the flash drive's root directory. Make sure you don't have any spaces or illegal characters in the filenames so that they open properly.

If you feel like getting a little fancy, you can even add more like a company icon or use a long label to name the drive:

[autorun]
Icon=MyLogo.ico
Label=My long drive name here
;Open=PlayMe.exe
ShellExecute=PlayMe.exe
UseAutoPlay=1

Here is how it would look copied onto your USB Drive. You may need to change the .ico file properties to Hidden to allow your autorun to work properly on most PC machines so Windows won't try to open them in a picture viewer.

How to lock any file or folder without any software

How to lock any file or folder without any software

How to lock any file or folder without any software

How to lock any file or folder without any software

Most of us have private data. Not all of us have a private computer to keep that data. So, we just end up with other people viewing that data. Although password protecting software do work, it is almost useless to hide private data with these software(because we are always questioned as to what it is that we are hiding with the help of these software).

Hidden folders do not work as they can be easily searched with Windows Search. So, we need an alternative way to create hidden password protected folders which only we can access. And that is exactly what we will learn in this post.

With this trick, you can create a secure password protected folder in Windows which no one except you can access. To use this trick, follow the instructions given below:-

1. Open Notepad.
2. Copy and paste the exact code given below:-

cls
@ECHO OFF
title http://bestcomputertricksandtips.blogspot.com
if EXIST "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" goto UNLOCK
if NOT EXIST MyFolder goto MDMyFolder
:CONFIRM
echo Are you sure to lock this folder? (Y/N)
set/p "cho=>"
if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
if %cho%==y goto LOCK
if %cho%==n goto END
if %cho%==N goto END
echo Invalid choice.
goto CONFIRM
:LOCK
ren MyFolder "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
attrib +h +s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
echo Folder locked
goto End
:UNLOCK
echo Enter password to Unlock Your Secure Folder
set/p "pass=>"
if NOT %pass%== computer-tricks-corner.blogspot.com goto FAIL
attrib -h -s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
ren "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" MyFolder
echo Folder Unlocked successfully
goto End
:FAIL
echo Invalid password
goto end
:MDMyFolder
md MyFolder
echo MyFolder created successfully
goto End
:End

3. Click on the File Menu. Click on Save As.
4. Select All Types (or all files) in the Save As Type dropdown menu. Save the file as *.bat or Locker.bat

After creating the file, double click on the Saved file. A new folder will be created. Enter your data in the folder. Again, double click on the batch file. Type Y and press Enter. The folder will be hidden from view. To re-view your folder, double click on the saved batch file. Enter password as " bestcomputertricksandtips.blogspot.com " without quotes ("") and press Enter key. This is also the default password. Your folder will be visible again. To change the default password, edit the part of the code given in blue and enter your own password. The overall usability of this trick can be improved by deleting the batch file after hiding your folder and re-creating it when you wish to access your folder again. If you face any problem using this trick, you can write a comment and I will do my best to help you.
Note : This works on Windows 7, Windows XP and Vista. First try this on useless data to be sure and then only hide your personal data.

Make Facebook Chat Better:--

Make Facebook Chat Better: By adding profile photos in chat messages

Make Facebook Chat Better:

You Have already tried Google tricks like, "Do a barrel roll" and "Let it snow" are the tricks recently introduced by Google. But this time, Facebook has come up with an innovative Trick that lets users add profile photos in their Facebook chat messages.

It's very simple! All the users need to do is put the [[username]] into the chat message, send it and they will see the text replaced with the profile image. Though the image appears is quite small like an emoticon, but it's cool.

Here I explain you in detail that how you can do it:

  • Start chatting with someone (pretty simple).
  • Get the username or profile ID (it is at the end of the URL). For instance,if you will go to our profile, the URL appear will be: http://www.facebook.com/linkstoweb . However in some cases, you will find the number instead of a name number such as http://www.facebook.com/111111111
  • Put the name or number in double brackets like [[number]] in case of the first URL, and [[linkstoweb]] for the second URL
  • Enter the same into your Facebook Chat. When you will send it, the bracketed number or letters will replaced with the profile image. For Eg: “ Hi Welcome to Linkstoweb [[Linkstoweb]] ”
  • Enter the same into your Facebook Chat. When you will send it, the bracketed number or letters will replaced with the profile image. For Eg: “ Hi Welcome to Linkstoweb [[Linkstoweb]] ” -Here [[linkstoweb]] will replaced by our profile picture .

Download Complete Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Setup

Many new Windows applications requires latest version of Microsoft .NET framework which is version 3.5 at the time of of writing of this post. If you go to Microsoft download center, then by default you will get live installer of approximately 2-3 MB’s while complete .NET framework requires 50-200 MB. Actually on the same page there are links to complete setup but they are placed in a way that anyone can hardly notice them. Seems like Microsoft wants you to download live installer but there are problems with live installer…

  • It may hang forever if you have slow internet connection like dial-up, GPRS, etc. You can not use it at all if your computer is not connected to internet
  • Also if you are running pirated Windows better not to use any software/installer from Microsoft which connects to Internet.

<

Here I am giving you links to complete Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 & 3.5 setups which are gathered from Microsoft pages

dll not found -How To Troubleshoot DLL Errors

How To Troubleshoot DLL Errors

How To Troubleshoot DLL Errors

A DLL error is any error with a DLL file - a kind of file ending in the DLL file extension.

DLL errors are especially troublesome because there are so many DLL files in existence, all with the potential to cause trouble. Luckily, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take that have a great chance of solving any DLL error you might have.

Important: These are general DLL error troubleshooting steps. If you haven't already, search my site for the specific DLL file you're having issues with. I may not have information for the exact DLL but if I do, the steps there will be more likely to help.

Here's How:

  • IMPORTANT: Do NOT download DLL files from DLL download sites in an attempt to replace your missing or corrupt DLL files.
  • There are several reasons why downloading a DLL file to solve a DLL error is a very bad idea, least of which is that it may not solve your problem. Note: If you've already downloaded a DLL file from one of these DLL download sites, remove it from wherever you put it and continue troubleshooting below.

  • Restore the deleted DLL file from the Recycle Bin. You may have simply accidentally deleted the DLL file.
  • Most DLL errors come in the "DLL Not Found" and "DLL is Missing" form. The easiest possible cause of a DLL error like this is that you've deleted the DLL file without realizing it. Note: Enter Safe Mode to do this or any of the following steps if you're unable to access Windows normally due to this DLL error.

  • Recover the deleted DLL file with a free file recovery program. If you suspect that you've accidentally deleted the DLL file but you've since emptied the Recycle Bin, a file recovery program can help.
  • Important: Recovering a DLL file with a file recovery program is a smart idea only if you're confident you've deleted the file yourself and that it was working properly before you did that.

Run Older Programs in windows 7

Run Older Programs in windows 7

Make older programs run in this version of Windows

Most programs written for Windows XP also work in this version of Windows, but some older programs might run poorly or not at all. If a program written for an earlier version of Windows doesn't run correctly, use the Program Compatibility Wizard to change the compatibility settings for the program. To change settings for a program manually, use the individual program's Compatibility tab. If changing the settings does not fix the problem, go to the program manufacturer's website to see if there is an update for the program.

Run the Program Compatibility Wizard

  • Open the Program Compatibility Wizard by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Use an older program with this version of Windows.
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard.

If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the wizard, browse to the program's setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. The wizard is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension. To change compatibility settings manually for a program, right-click the icon for the program, click Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab.

Compatibility mode Runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows. Try this setting if you know the program is designed for (or worked in) a specific previous version of Windows. Run in 256 colors Uses a limited set of colors in the program. Some older programs are designed to use fewer colors. Run in 640 × 480 screen resolution Runs the program in a smaller-sized window. Try this setting if the graphical user interface appears jagged or is rendered improperly. Disable visual themes Disables themes on the program. Try this setting if you notice problems with the menus or buttons on the title bar of the program. Disable desktop composition Turns off transparency and other advanced display features. Choose this setting if window movement appears erratic or you notice other display problems. Disable display scaling on high DPI settings Turns off automatic resizing of programs if large-scale font size is in use. Try this setting if large-scale fonts are interfering with the appearance of the program. For more information, see Make the text on your screen larger or smaller and Ways to improve display quality. Privilege level Runs the program as an administrator. Some programs require administrator privileges to run properly. If you are not currently logged on as an administrator, this option is not available. Show settings for all users Lets you choose settings that will apply to all users on this computer.

After you download and extract the zip file, open the PAC Compiler. This application will build the ‘real’ application: Portable Application Creator. To do so, PAC Compiler needs a file called autoit-v3-sfx.exe and will scan your drive for it. If it can’t find the needed file, it will ask you to download the file from the Internet.

After that, PAC Compiler will build PAC

It will appear on the same folder as the compiler.

Creating A Portable App

Now let’s start building our portable application(s). Run PAC and tell it which drive is the portable drive.

Plug in your portable drive and find out the drive letter. Go back to PAC, choose the letter and click “Next“.

The next step will be locating the installer file of the application that you want to turn into a portable app. The PAC documentation mentions that the applications should be something that you’ve never installed before in your hard drive

That’s exactly what portable app creator will help you to do. It seems that the original developer of PAC has long abandoned the project. So the one that we are going to use is the modified version by a PAC user. Remove Writen Protection On USB Pen Drive

Remove Writen Protection On USB Pen Drive

Remove Writen Protection On USB Pen Drive

Trouble:

In the past we had received so many problems from the readers who have a problem in copying files on their USB portable devices like pen drives, memory card and iPod etc.

According to the mails we had received about this problem, people have seen the following errors when their thumbs drives, memory card etc becomes write protected.

  • Cannot copy files and folders, drive is write protected
  • Cannot format the drive, drive is write protected
  • The disk is write protected
  • Remove write protection or use another disk
  • Media is write protected

Some times people say that suddenly their drive become write protected and they are not able to delete any files and folder on the drive and also not able to copy new files and folder to USB portable drive.

Let’s see how can you remove write protection on your portable devices like pen drives, memory cards, iPod and other USB mass storage devices.

Fix:

Write Protection on any portable USB Device can be applied by the physical lock provided on the card adjuster or some times provided on the pen drives, so make sure to make your drive not write protected by moving the lock in right direction. But even after moving the physical lock for write protection the problem can happen due to some virus action. This happens when some virus or script which applies the registry hack to make any drive write protect when connected to the computer, In that case follow the procedure below to remove write protection from your pen drive.

1. Open Start Menu >> Run, type regedit and press Enter, this will open the registry editor. 2. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
3. Double click the key WriteProtect in the right pane and set the value to 0 in the Value Data Box and press OK button
4. Exit Registry, restart your computer and then again re-connect your USB pen drive on your computer. That is it, done.
